Preparation is Key
Although it is difficult to predict when the next influenza pandemic will occur or how severe it may be, the effects of a pandemic can be lessened if we all take the necessary steps to prepare. The benefits of being prepared include an increased readiness to respond to a pandemic, a clear understanding of proper roles to play before, during and after the crisis, and an awareness of the pandemic preparedness activities currently underway in the Commonwealth.
Pandemic Flu Plan Update
Kentucky's public health officials are taking the possibility of a flu pandemic very seriously. The Kentucky Pandemic Influenza Preparedness Plan that was originally developed in 2002 is being updated to provide guidelines to state and local health departments and establishes the guidelines for an effective response.
Pandemic Flu Summits Held
Governor Ernie Fletcher and U.S. Health and Human Services (HHS) Deputy Secretary Alex Azar II were joined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Director Julie Gerberding and other officials at Kentucky's Pandemic Readiness and Emergency Planning Summit held on January 20, 2006 at the Frankfort Convention Center. More than 500 representatives from business, schools, state and local government, emergency responders, hospitals, and others met to discuss local, state and national preparations for an influenza pandemic. Secretary Azar urged Kentucky to hold local summits statewide in order to prepare for the possible outbreak of pandemic flu.
A total of 50 local pandemic flu summits have been held statewide with participation from all 120 counties of the Commonwealth to help inform and engage public health and emergency response communities with political, economic and community leadership in the state's pandemic planning process. Positive turnout, combined with interest from all segments of the population made the flu summits a success. Hosted by local health departments, summit attendees included first responders, hospitals, schools, churches, farmers, businesses, members of the media as well as families and individuals.
Emergency Supply Kit
When planning for a possible emergency situation such as pandemic influenza, it's best to think first about the basics of survival, including fresh water, food, clean air and warmth. Because it may be necessary to protect yourself and others from contracting the virus, you may have to remain in your home for several days. A pandemic emergency supply kit is recommended if you are required to shelter in place for an extended period of time.
